One of us is next cover6/29/2023 I’m always skeptical about sequels that take focus away from the characters that I bonded with in the first book. It took the threat from superficial to legit. I felt this was where the tension picked up significantly as more information that brought the characters together was revealed. McManus developed an excellent way to keep people interested in the game. Once the attention was taken off them, the urgency to find the killer slipped away a bit. I liked feeling as lost as the characters did as they attempted to piece together the evidence. Bayview had been made famous for events like this, so it provided a larger suspect pool. With this book, the possibilities for who could be the copycat were more abundant than just the school. If it’s done well, then you fall for the red hearing, but I find that if it’s not done then it fails as a plot device. Most thrillers or mystery novel will present another side character as the killer. Additionally, she didn’t create obvious suspects, which was refreshing. From the previous book in this series, I knew that she could keep secrets from the readers until she was ready to reveal the correct answers. Building suspense and uncertainty is crucial for a mystery to work, in my opinion. The best part of a mystery is not knowing who did it.
